Telstra Wednesday announced plans to join the voice-over Internet Protocol services fray with a new offering that will debut in December.

Clarent Corp. (CLRN) will act as one of the main suppliers for the IP
telephony network.

The VoIP service will enable ISPs and Telstra wholesale customers to add voice products and services.

Telstra (TLS) expects the move to bolster its telecommunications carrier position in the Asia Pacific, according to Peter Dutton, general manager of Telstra Global Wholesale.

“The global telecommunications market is looking more to emerging
technologies to develop competitive edge,” said Dutton. “Telstra has embraced new technological developments and is rapidly
expanding into a broad range of IP based applications for voice and data.”

Telstra’s network currently accesses more than 200
countries and generates over $200 million each year in global voice services to wholesales clients.
