Listen up UPS and Fed Ex. An alliance was formalized today to provide mobile workers and delivery people with a broader selection of hardware and software solutions for field-based mobile communications.

Los Angeles-based Thinque will integrate Symbol Technologies Inc.’s handheld computers with its Mobile Solutions Platform software for compatibility with Symbol’s three handheld devices: the SPT 1733/34, PPT 2733/34, and PDT 753X, all designed for more effective field service, proof of delivery, and package tracking. So there are no more excuses when that Amazon.com book order does not arrive.

A winner of the National Medal of Technology, Symbol Technologies develops customer solutions based on wireless local area networking for data and voice, application-specific mobile computing, and bar code data capture to connect the physical world of people on the move with the Internet.

According to Symbol Technologies, some 10 million of Symbol’s bar code scanners, mobile computers, and wireless local area networks are utilized worldwide in markets ranging from retail, transportation, manufacturing, parcel and postal delivery, government, health care, and education.

The partnership between the two companies is expected to better enable organizations with mobile workers to maintain more reliable communication with field workers.

Thinque’s Mobile Solutions Platform provides what the company refers to as “anytime, anywhere” connectivity to mobile workers and corporate management. The product utilizes handheld personal computers and can run in both wireless and wired modes, enabling information to be collected and transmitted in real time for instantaneous feedback on critical business information.

“We are pleased that Thinque’s Mobile Solutions Platform, the industry’s most versatile and robust mobile enterprise application, will now be accessible through Symbol’s market-leading handheld devices,” said Rich Love, vice president of business development for Thinque. “With today’s announcement, Thinque reinforces its commitment to field-centric corporations worldwide by continuing to expand product compatibility to a wide range of portable hardware systems.”

Thinque will also join Symbol’s partner program.
