Leading modem maker U.S. Robotics Monday unveiled the 56K Internet Call Modem which gives normal telephones Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) capability while retaining the sound quality of a telephone.
Developed in conjunction with Net2Phone, the internal PCI-bus modem utilizes Net2Phone’s Internet telephony network to enable free calls within the U.S. and Canada. While the modem still has to be connected to a computer as well as a telephone, the modem enables a user to dial Internet calls directly on a telephone’s keypad when online and using Net2Phone’s software, which comes with the modem. The Internet Call modem also works with a user’s existing Call Waiting and Caller ID services to provide an “Incoming Call” notification onscreen if the user receives a call while online.
“The seamless integration of U.S. Robotics’ technology with Net2Phone’s VoIP solution allows call management capabilities not previously available in 56K modems,” said Juan Lopez, senior product manager for U.S. Robotics.
The modem also has built-in full-duplex speakerphone capability which, according to U.S. Robotics, allows crystal clear, simultaneous conversation between all parties and eliminates cut-off sentences and awkward pauses. Also, U.S. Robotics’ Distinctive Ring Feature allows users to assign separate phone numbers for incoming fax, data and voice calls — all on a single line.
“The Internet Call Modem is the first of many U.S. Robotics products that will make the Internet experience less intrusive and more user-friendly,” said Len Landi, product line manager for U.S. Robotics. “The integration of the Internet Call Modem’s hardware with Net2Phone’s software creates a natural and intuitive experience for users. They can easily call any phone in the world, call another PC, send voice e-mail or participate in live voice chat, all using the Internet.”
In addition to Net2Phone’s software, the modem comes with the U.S. Robotics Connections CD and Installation Essentials CD, which includes a multimedia installation video and fax and Internet access software, as well as software for work, home and entertainment.
The Internet Call Modem has a suggested retail price of $99.95.
