Santa Clara, CA-based 8×8, Inc. announced that its ViaTV Set-top Videophone will soon be available in the UK, and the product has also received regulatory approval in Sweden, Austria, Belgium, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, Switzerland, and Spain.

The first public showing of the ViaTV Set-top Videophone in the UK will be at the BBC’s Tomorrow’s World Live exhibition in Birmingham’s NEC from Feb 11-15. For purchase, it will be at selected high street consumer electronics retailers at the beginning of March.

“The ViaTV phone is a great way of keeping in close contact with friends and family,” said Tim Williams, 8×8’s European Director of System Products. “It provides much closer communication than a normal phone and cuts down on the expense, hassle and inconvenience of travel. We are delighted to be launching
it onto the UK market and look forward to rolling it out across Europe later in the year.”

Among the features of ViaTV Videophone are electronic pan, tilt and zoom, snapshot, self view, and auto answer. Auto answer allows it to be used as a security or baby monitor, users being able to check on their children or other valuables from miles away with just a telephone call.

ViaTV Videophone will cost 399 pounds including VAT.
