Virgin Net’s New Director May Bring Shopping Cart

Virgin Net,
one of the UK’s top entertainment and leisure guides, has appointed
Alex Heath, formerly chief executive of
interactive investor international
(iii.co.uk)
, to the position of managing director.


It is expected that Heath, who starts officially in the post
on September 1, will not only oversee the expansion of Virgin’s
online entertainment guide but also introduce a range of online
shopping services.


“We are confident that Alex’s strong track record in the new media
industry will serve him well in taking Virgin Net on to the next phase
of its development,” said Gordon McCallum, group strategy director
for the Virgin Group.


“We expect to significantly expand the range of services it provides to subscribers, with the addition of a broader range of shopping choices, the introduction of
secure online payment for all goods and services, and a dedicated Web
service for subscribers to Virgin Mobile.”


Virgin Net claims to be used by almost a million people every month,
of whom 400,000 connect to the Internet with Virgin’s free connection
package. The company says its entertainment guide has 15 million page
impressions each month.


Alex Heath has been working with Virgin for around six months, looking
after the development of the new shopping services which already being
tested by Virgin staff.


First launched in November 1996, Virgin Net says it aims to
bring “clarity and simplicity to increasingly complicated
lifestyles.” Its guide features cinema, music, travel, sport,
days out, games, shopping, radio, TV, discussion rooms and
online search.
