A key executive at VMware has exited, just weeks after the second-quarter earnings call in July.

“Our most critical assets are people, as we’re a software company, and I’ll make sure our people know they have a great future in this company,” he said. “Leadership change is still a concern of mine, I’m spending lots of time getting to know key technical employees of the company, and I’m hopeful we’ll be able to weather the transition with as little negative impact as we can.”

Meanwhile, the looming threat of competition from Microsoft, which sped up the release of its Hyper-V hypervisor, is keeping everyone at VMware on edge. Maritz has vowed to meet Microsoft head on and, shortly after his taking over as CEO, VMware brought out ESXi, a free version of its hypervisor.
