WAP Banking Goes Live

[Sydney, AUSTRALIA] Westpac Banking and Cable & Wireless Optus have teamed up to deliver a multi-carrier WAP banking service.

Westpac customers using the service are now able to view their account lists, check balances and transfer funds via both the Optus and Telstra services.

“WAP services have the potential to boost the popularity and usage of Internet banking,” said Westpac’s head of eStrategy Harry Wendt. “With 82 percent of our Internet customer base telling us they are interested in using the WAP service for Internet banking, we are looking forward to fulfilling the pent up demand.”

In August Westpac introduced the first working model in the Australian marketplace with Telstra, and has been expected to launch an Optus service for several months.

“In the future we are planning customized notification services such as advising customers if a credit card payment is due, or share price alerts,” Mr. Wendt said. “The range of WAP devices and service is expanding dramatically, increasing access and control for our customers.”
