The market for 802.11b-related products increased by more than 20 percent in the second quarter of this year, paced by sales of residential gateways, market research firm Dell ‘Oro Group said Thursday.

The research firm said that sales of 802.11b products into the home and small businesses currently is outpacing sales of WLANs into the enterprise.

“Clearly, for the past six months strong home and small business demand has driven the 802.11b market,” says Greg Collins, a director at Dell’Oro Group. “Strong SOHO sales are effectively seeding the market with users.”

He noted that many enterprises are experimenting with WLANs and sales into that segment should increase as the economy improves and as security issues are resolved.

The study found that sales of wireless broadband gateways increased by 191 percent in the second quarter compared to the first quarter and sales of wireless network interface cards increased 16 percent.
