As the Internet business turns increasingly toward broadband and wireless content delivery, audience measurement firm Media Metrix said Tuesday it would turn its attention to these emerging new platforms.
The New York-based company has created a New Media group, which will cover streaming media and software applications over the Internet as well as Internet usage on devices such as Web phones, palm devices and television set top boxes.
“The Internet is growing rapidly beyond the static model of page views into much more dynamic content of streaming media and other rich media experiences,” said Andy Fessel, senior vice president of Media Metrix and the head of the newly-created group.
“The range of measures offered by Media Metrix will expand to include the full range of content formats and delivery systems that consumers access in this quickly developing digital media marketplace.”
The company is starting out by providing statistics on streaming media. The streaming media report, which will look at the file name, time used, server source, linking source and effective transmission speed, will first be released early next year.
