Optical-networking products provider Sorrento Networks Corp. said that broadband-cable operator Cox Communications Inc. is deploying Sorrento’s metro and regional optical networking equipment as part of an extensive program to construct its own nationwide high-speed optical network.

Sorrento is supplying GigaMux and EPC optical networking equipment as well as TeraManager, Sorrento’s carrier class management system, for Cox’s nationwide optical IP backbone network.

Sorrento is in the second year of a four-year optical networking equipment supply agreement with Cox Communications. Sorrento has already engineered and installed several metro optical networks enabling Cox Communications to provide wholesale and managed services under this agreement, officials said.

As a platform designed specifically for metro and regional networking, the GigaMux system simplifies optical networking while providing the scalability and in-service expansion operators require. With GigaMux, they can effortlessly grow their network without disrupting existing services to meet their increasing demands.

A GigaMux system scales very efficiently, starting with as few as four wavelengths and increasing up to 64 wavelengths per fiber with data transmission speeds of up to 10 Gbps per wavelength. Sorrento’s EPC, sub-rate multiplexers allow several signals to be aggregated into a higher-rate signal for maximum wavelength efficiency. TeraManager, Sorrento’s carrier class optical network element management system, provides end-end optical network management solutions.
