D-Link Rolls Out 802.11b Compact Flash Adapter

D-Link today introduced its newest entry into the exploding 802.11b product scene. Its new D-Link Air DCF-650W is a compact flash wireless network adapter for handheld PCs and PDAs.

The DCF-650W supports 64- and 128-bit WEP encryption, satisfying enterprise WLAN security requirements, according to D-Link. It includes a compact flash user interface for Pocket PC. The adapter can use multiple, user-controlled power settings, enabling the user to choose between battery life extension and effective range for connectivity. The DCF-650W is hot-swappable, simplifying removal, storage, installation, and interchangeability based on user requirements.

The D-Link DCF-650W can function in either peer-to-peer (ad hoc) or infrastructure modes (using access points). It enables user mobility without additional configuration with effective ranges of 100 meters indoor and 300 meters per cell outdoors.

The device, according to D-Link, is 100% compliant with IEEE 802.11b standards for WLANs. It operates in the 2.4 GHz band using Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS) technology and can operate in 3.3V DC in two different power consumption modes.

Transmit rates are also configurable, enabling the selection of fixed 1, 2, 5.5, and 11 Mbps data rates as well as a fully automatic mode. The device includes an internal, non-detachable patch inverse F antenna. There are two LED s indicating real-time power, network link, and activity status. D-Link stated that the adapter is fully compatible with Windows CE version 3.O.

The DCF-650W is available now through retail, reseller, and distribution partners according to D-Link. It carries an MSRP of $199 and an estimated street price of $149. It comes with a lifetime warrantey and free tech support, including software and driver updates, according to the company.
