12 Online Scams to Avoid This Holiday Season

Holiday shoppers looking to dodge the cold weather, lousy parking options and long lines at the stores by buying gifts online should know that shopping with their mobile phones or PCs can be stressful, too.

As eSecurity Planet reports, security software vendor McAfee this week issued its “12 Scams of Christmas” advisory, warning consumers of a dozen of the more dangerous threats and scams awaiting online holiday shoppers.

Whether it’s thieves looking to poach your online credentials from an unsecured Wi-Fi hotspot or hustlers using deceptive email attachments and too-good-to-be-true offers, there are plenty of scams people need to know about and avoid through the end of the year.

With Thanksgiving fast approaching and holiday shopping advertisements popping up online and off, security software vendor McAfee this week rolled out its tongue-in-cheek nod to the partridges and pear trees everywhere with its “Twelve Scams of Christmas” list.

The list includes a number of old favorites like Wi-Fi sidejackers who hangout at broadband hotspots hoping to snare users passwords and login credentials and phishers who inundate users’ email boxes with all manner of spam and malware.
