Adding security compliance tools to its antivirus offerings, Symantec said it would buy privately held Sygate Technologies.

Sygate’s products help corporations ensure that all devices connected to a network — desktops, laptops and mobile devices – have the most current security software, patches and configurations.

When the deal closes, Symantec Antivirus and Symantec Client Security customers can license Sygate’s Network Access Control (SNAC) agent to improve their network defenses.

Industry watchers said Cupertino, Calif.-based Symantec has picked up complementary technology.

”We believe that with Sygate, Symantec now has a response to similar initiatives from Microsoft and Cisco, which have been resonating with customers,” analysts at SG Cowen said in a note to investors today.

The acquisition comes as corporations, including media outlets CNN, ABC and The New York Times, are recovering from the latest worm.

Symantec did not disclose the financial terms of the deal for Fremont, Calif.-based Sygate. In addition to its enterprise tools, Sygate has a line of firewalls and other security software for consumers and small businesses.
