eBay seems to be glitching more and more often. Last week it was
security woes, and now its clothing and jewelry categories went walkabout
for more than nine hours over the weekend.
The San Jose, Calif.-based auction company had
another service outage in March for about an hour and a half, the first
such outage since January of 2001, when the site went
off-line for almost 11 hours.
The company said that in accordance with its standard policy when viewing and
eBay said on its site that “viewing and bidding on items
in the Clothing & Accessories category and the Jewelry, Gems and Watches
category was unavailable on Sunday, April 7th between 10:55 and 20:07 PDT.”
“We are still reviewing the situation but we believe that the problems were
caused by data corruption in these two categories,” said eBay spokesman Kevin
Pursglove.

eBay went through a rough time with outages in 1999, and worked hard to get
its system under control. At one point it suffered through a 22-hour service
outage that cost
the company an estimated $2 million in lost revenue.
