Attention Shoppers: Lucent and Netscape Team Up

Taking a dive into the potentially lucrative
electronic commerce pool, Lucent
Technologies
said today it licensed Netscape Communications Corp.’s
CommerceXpert suite of electronic commerce applications and Netscape’s
Application Server software.

Lucent said the incorporated Netscape products are for its co-developed Lucent ECommerce Solutions, a
package offering consulting services, software and e-commerce network
security products. Lucent ECommerce Solutions are generally available now.

The cooperative multi-year agreement also calls for the companies to
jointly market, sell and support Lucent’s ECommerce Solutions to service
providers and large enterprise customers. Financial details were not
announced.

Initially, Lucent’s ECommerce Solutions package will be comprised of three
components:

  • Lucent Professional Services: business process consulting, integration
and operations services with beginning-to-end project management.

  • Netscape Software: Netscape’s CommerceXpert suite of e-commerce
applications and Netscape Application Server for creating and using
    business-to-business and business-to-consumer e-commerce solutions.

  • Lucent Security Products: network security provided by the Lucent
Managed Firewall, featuring a distributed architecture, security zones and
centralized management. This can also be upgraded to deliver
standards-compliant virtual private networking (VPN) capabilities.

The first three Lucent ECommerce Solutions available to customers will be:
Internet Procurement
Solutions, which converts paper processes into online transactions;
Self-Service Solutions, which enables clients to personalize services on a
business Web site; and Business Trading Solutions, aimed at growing
revenues for service providers and enterprises
by hosting online trading communities.

Lucent said future products and services additions to its ECommerce
Solutions will include Lucent’s Internet Call Center, allowing businesses
to put a “talk to me” button on a Web site, enabling
multimedia PC-customers to speak with a customer agent while online without
needing a second phone line.

“Increasingly, service providers are viewing electronic commerce as a
competitive advantage that can streamline costs, improve customer
relationships, provide new value-added services and grow their business,”
said Duane Elmquist, vice president, Lucent Internet Software Group.

“By leveraging Netscape’s electronic commerce expertise and our knowledge of
the business processes and networks used by service providers and
enterprises, Lucent is uniquely positioned to help our customers
aggressively meet those goals.”
