Say It Ain’t Snow

Travelocity.com, following a similar announcement earlier this week from rival travel site Expedia, launched a new ski and snowboarding vacations area on its site and kicked it off with a promotion offering “the Ultimate Ski Trip.”

Expedia launched its ski area earlier this week. Fort Worth, Texas-based Travelocity said its new ski area offers packages from Travelocity Vacations, American Airlines Vacations and Moguls Mountain Travel.

“Travelocity.com has partnered with premier resorts to bring our 30 million members an outstanding selection of ski vacation packages at great rates,” said Chris McAndrews, Travelocity.com senior vice president of leisure travel and media.

The new area offers mountain resort guides for more than 80 ski resort towns including Vail, Aspen, Snowmass, Park City, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Taos, Stowe, Lake Tahoe, and Steamboat Springs, as well as numerous resorts in Canada and Europe.

The lottery-type promo is a partner deal with Vail Resorts for five nights of lodging, round-trip airfare, lift tickets and some meals.

Priceline.com , meanwhile, has a fairly new category called “resorts” in its hotel section.

“Right now, it’s still dominated by summer-type resort properties,” a Priceline spokesman told InternetNews.com in an e-mail exchange. But “…as the weather starts to turn, we’ll begin adding in our winter sports resort properties in the U.S. and Canada. … Of course, if skiing isn’t your idea of a winter vacation, you can also select resorts in the Bahamas, Mexico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Hawaii, California, Arizona, Florida, etc.”

Separately, Travelocity said that Thanksgiving travel plans remain about the same compared to last year, according to a recent online poll that it conducted.

And, more importantly given the events of Sept. 11, more travelers — 64 percent compared to 59 percent last year — say they will fly this year during the Thanksgiving holiday.

“our sense is that people want to be with friends and family now more than ever,” said Terrell B. Jones, president and chief executive officer of Travelocity.com. “Many have said it will be consumers who keep our nation’s economy thriving, and I think that through these survey results American travelers are telling us they are not going to give up. They will keep going, they will keep flying and they will keep traveling.”
