Servers aren’t always the most exciting segment of the tech industry, but their importance to companies large and small can’t be overstated. The key players, HP, IBM, Dell, etc. are in a dogfight to deliver more performance, reliability and other features to win a bigger share of the enterprise market.

As Server Watch details, IDC just issued its latest report on server sales that reveals which of the major vendors has gained the most revenue and where the growth is among the three key segments: volume x86 servers, midrange and high-end enterprise systems.

Despite continued economic doldrums; the market for servers saw a healthy revenue increase in the third quarter of 2010, according to research released Monday by IDC.

Factory revenue in the worldwide server market increased 13.2 percent during the same quarter last year to $11.8 billion. IDC said it’s the third consecutive quarter of year-over-year revenue growth and the fastest growth since 2000.
