An Evening with Containers

SEATTLE – As part of the kickoff for the Linuxcon Containercon conference here there was An Evening with Containers on August 16. Seven speakers in total each delivered 5 minute lightning talks about different topics related to containers.

Not one of the seven speakers was from Docker Inc and not one talked specifically about the open-source containerconDocker project. Rather all seven were talks about adjacent areas to Docker and all of the technologies actually do rely or leverage Docker in some way.

StackEngine evangelist Boyd Hemphill summarized why anyone should care about Docker containers in the first place – simply put it’s about making money.

“If you can’t find a reason to help you company make money there is no point,” Hemphill said.

Docker containers can help to accelerate processes, iterate fast, and enable organization to take risks faster and deploy faster.

Andrew Kennedy from CloudSoft discussed his company’s clocker.io tool that integrated multiple components including Apache Brooklyn and Apache Mesos to build a new management layer for containers.

Patrick Butler Monterde of EMC code detailed a new hackathon contest that leverages containers in a simulated Mars expedition.

Eduardo Silva spoke about the fluentd logging effort for Docker and Madhuri Yechuri of clusterHQ spoke about Flocker for container persistence management. Yechuri was also brave enough to do a live demo, which actually worked.

Rounding out the talks was one from Krishnan Subramanian from Red Hat who emphasized the need for enterprise support. Subramanian said that Docker isn’t just for hobbyist in their basements, it’s for enterprises.

“Containers on their own are not ready for enterprises,” Subramanian said. “So you need a reliable vendor to stand behind it.”
