Autonomy’s Compliance App Uses Cloud Tech

Autonomy isn’t just releasing the Autonomy Web Content Compliance solution this week, it’s also showing off the scalability of its Digital Safe Archive. Autonomy Digital Safe already manages over 10 petabytes (PB) of data and it’s ready to add more.

The new solution, unveiled yesterday, repackages the services and capabilities that Autonomy (LSE: AU) already has. It combines Autonomy’s IDOL software with products obtained in the Zantaz
and Interwoven acquisitions.

“Today’s announcement is another example of the powerful solutions we can bring to market by combining Autonomy’s Intelligent Data Operating Layer with Autonomy Interwoven’s market-leading Web solutions,” Anthony Bettencourt, CEO of Autonomy Interwoven, said in a statement.

The goal is compliance. The solution will store not only e-mail but all Web interactions, including multiple versions of the corporate Web site and including instant messages, rich media files, audio files, and other content.

“An insurance company can now produce a record of the exact premiums it offered online to a particular segment of customers during a marketing campaign conducted several months ago,” the company said in a statement. The insurance industry is subject to more lawsuits than most, noted Brian Weiss, Autonomy vice president for information governance and compliance.

The solution can also serve as an enterprise knowledge store, said Annie Weinberger, director of product marketing for Autonomy Interwoven. She added that for customers already using Autonomy’s TeamSite content management system, adding the new service could be as easy as checking a box.

The biggest archive

However user-friendly Autonomy’s software may be, compliance itself isn’t getting easier. “The need to record and produce point-in-time records of Web content for compliance requirements is becoming a major issue at the world’s largest banks, insurance companies, and retailers,” said Bettencourt.

The data is stored in what the company said is the world’s largest data archive. The company said that its Digital Safe solution now manages over 10 petabytes of data on 6,500 servers, archiving three million files per hour.

Each month, Digital Safe produces 4,000 “litigation-ready content flows” in response to audits and eDiscovery queries. It uses two SAS 70-compliant datacenters that are geographically dispersed in any location it is offered, with two datacenters each in the UK, Europe, the U.S. and the Asia-Pacific region.

“It is critical for companies to unify all of their communications into a repository to make it easy to search and find information that relates to potential issues. Autonomy helps companies to reduce their costs of eDiscovery and comply with emerging regulations,” said Mike Sullivan, CEO of Autonomy ZANTAZ in a statement.

The Autonomy Web Content Compliance solution is available now at a price that depends on a wide variety of factors. It is the first of a series of releases that will build on Autonomy’s recent acquisitions. “We have a long list of cool things that we’re doing,” said Weinberger.

Weiss provided some details. “Autonomy’s [IDOL] technology can bring a lot of value to business applications,” he said. “Meaning based computing can change the way traditional applications work. It’s good and exciting stuff.”
