While companies are finally waking up to the importance of creating an effective e-discovery strategy to do things like investigate employees, conduct research for lawsuits or get to the bottom of both intentional and unintentional security breaches, a full 26 percent of executives surveyed said their organizations had yet to implement an official e-discovery program.
According to a survey of 650 IT professionals by CompTIA, about have of those queried have managed to set up either a partial or comprehensive e-discovery strategy. Those haven’t said excessive costs and a lack of staff expertise were the main impediments.
“Many organizations lack expertise in this emerging area,” said Tim Herbert, vice president, research, CompTIA. “That’s significant because the increasingly connected and digital world in which companies operate means the number of situations calling for e-discovery will only grow.”
As CIO Update discovered, this lack of expertise should create bountiful opportunities for IT solution providers with the right skills and expertise.
Among more than 650 IT professionals surveyed in a CompTIA survey, E-Discovery Trends and Practices, 53 percent expect the use of ediscovery within their organizations to increase over the next few years.
However, many firms routinely engage in data collection and informal investigations related to personnel matters, violations of company policies and security breaches that never involve the legal system but may nonetheless fall under the umbrella of ediscovery.
