Pew: 8 Percent of Americans on Twitter

Twitter remains one of the most popular social services on the Web, but it is only used by 8 percent of Americans, according to a new study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project. Just 2 percent of the respondents said they visit the site on a typical day.

Pew’s report also examines the types of content users post to Twitter and looks at the demographics of the service’s user base. Datamation takes a look.


In its four-year history, microblogging service Twitter has become something of a household name, a favorite vehicle for celebrities to connect with their fans and a popular target for late-night comedians.

But how many Americans actually use Twitter?

Just 8 percent, according to a new survey from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, the organization’s first research project devoted exclusively to Twitter.
