Data-storage access solutions provider Adaptec Inc. said it has launched two 64-bit, 66MHz RAID controllers targeted at the fast-growing, $7.9 billion mid-range server market.

The new four-channel Adaptec RAID 3410S and two-channel Adaptec RAID 3210S controllers complement today’s faster 64-bit/66MHz servers, doubling the PCI-bus bandwidth of traditional mid-range server RAID products to significantly improve performance of the server’s critical storage resources, officials said. The Ultra160 SCSI RAID products are timely as customers increasingly rely on more bandwidth-intensive server applications to run their business.

The Adaptec RAID 3410S and 3210S controllers bring enterprise-class performance to the mid-range server market. The new architecture doubles PCI-bus bandwidth, up to 528MB/sec. The new controllers are easier to install and use than ever before, with a more-streamlined installation process, simplified management software, and improved user documentation, officials said.

Adaptec quoted research firm Gartner Dataquest as reporting that the mid-range server market–servers in the $5,000 to $10,000 price range–was a $7.9 billion market last year, and is expected to grow to $10.4 billion by 2003.

Last August, Adaptec said it launched its “RAID Everywhere” initiative, which is designed to accelerate the widespread adoption of RAID in the PC-server/high-end PC markets, in order to provide customers higher levels of data protection and greater speeds of information exchange in support of their business strategies. Key components of the plan include new product and technology developments, compatibility testing, and educational and support programs aimed at making RAID more affordable, accessible and easy-to-use.
