EMC Widens Storage Management Lead According to Gartner

Gartner Dataquest reported this week that EMC Corporation extended its No.1 market share lead in storage management software in 2000, growing nearly six points to 25.5% in the $5.3 billion worldwide storage management software market, which as a whole grew by 29%.

In her report, Carolyn DiCenzo, Chief Analyst for Gartner Dataquest’s storage group, praised EMC’s software development going back to the early 1990s. DiCenzo said, “Some vendors, however, don’t understand how to leverage their software effectively. EMC got it right early on and didn’t have to try to recover from the `giveaway’ strategy plaguing some of the other vendors.”

According to EMC, the Gartner Dataquest report confirms what other recent studies have found regarding the growth rates in information and an increasingly strategic role for intelligent storage software. One study by the University of California, Berkeley found that the amount of new information generated annually is expected to double. In fact, more original information will be created in the next two years (2001-02) than all the information accumulated in all of human history. Of course this has nothing to do with the quality of the information, but then again, that’s not what information storage is all about.
