IBM Integrates Emulex Fibre Channel HBAs

Emulex Corp., a supplier of storage networking host bus adapters (HBAs), announced that IBM Corp. has integrated a customized version of the Emulex LightPulse(R) LP9002 Fibre Channel HBA in its eServer pSeries enterprise and mid-range servers.


According to Emulex, the LP9002 can process more than 30,000 input/output (I/O) operations per second, and enables seamless migration to SANs operating at 2Gb/s data rates.

We have used Emulex HBAs for many years because of their high performance, rich feature set and flexible architecture,” said Chuck Bryan, director for IBM eServer pSeries. “By providing complete software compatibility with previous product generations, Emulex enables us to seamlessly upgrade to the latest state-of-the-art Fibre Channel technology that delivers faster data rates, higher overall performance and full interoperability.”


“IBM’s qualification of our LP9002 demonstrates its commitment to providing world-class storage networking solutions,” said Mike Smith, executive vice president of Worldwide Marketing at Emulex. “Emulex Fibre Channel HBAs are now used in IBM’s Shark Enterprise Storage Servers, the FICON-based eServer z900 series and NUMA-Q servers. By providing full backwards compatibility with previously-developed drivers and software, the LP9002 enables IBM and its customers to leverage investments made while migrating to next generation technology.”


The ‘s recent announcement of its GN9000/SI iSCSI HBAs further extends the Emulex product offering to include block level data access over IP networks, including data residing on Fibre Channel SANs. The Emulex family of IP networking products also includes the cLAN1000 host bus adapter and the cLAN 5000/5300 cluster switches, which are the preferred connectivity solution for VI-based system area networks.
