EMC’s LEGATO Software division has unveiled a number of product upgrades focusing on backup and recovery, long-distance replication, and data management. The products also tighten LEGATO’s product integration with EMC .
Topping the list, says Legato CTO George Symons, are new integrated protection and recovery solutions for information lifecycle management (ILM).

LEGATO’s new NetWorker PowerSnap Modules for EMC Symmetrix DMX and EMC CLARiiON CX series storage systems join previous modules designed for IBM TotalStorage FAStT, Sun StorEdge Availability Suite, and StorageTeK D-Series systems.
LEGATO also announced a Centera Backup and Recovery Module (CBRM), the first backup and recovery solution for the EMC Centera content-addressed storage
(CAS) system.
NetWorker PowerSnap integrates snapshots for backup and recovery with policy-based snapshot management; orchestration of snapshots with applications such as Oracle, Exchange, SQL, and SAP; and support for heterogeneous customer environments. The result, the company says, is quick recovery and reduced risk of critical data loss.
Through API integration with EMC TimeFinder and EMC SnapView software, NetWorker PowerSnap integrates snapshots in EMC Symmetrix DMX and CLARiiON CX series storage systems with NetWorker backup and recovery operations.
LEGATO also announced that its AAM (Automated Availability Manager) availability solution now supports EMC SRDF/Asynchronous (SRDF/A) software. The solution makes applications and data operational from a remote alternate site anywhere in the world.
AAM recovers data center operations at a second site by coordinating the restart and recovery of application services, connecting to SRDF (Symmetrix Remote Data Facility) replication data and reestablishing networks. AAM also monitors SRDF replication to ensure disaster recovery readiness.
LEGATO says AAM lets customers use existing IP network connections, saving them the cost of proprietary networks required by other clustering products.
“AAM coupled with EMC SRDF/A provides the level of business continuity that global business requires,” says Mike Karp, senior analyst at Enterprise Management Associates. “With this combined solution, customers can anticipate and frequently avoid failures and disasters instead of just reacting to them.”
LEGATO also announced the availability of ArchiveXtender 5.1 (ArcX). The update includes support for Microsoft Windows 2003 and optical technologies from
Sony and Plasmon.
ArcX integrates with healthcare, document imaging, financial, and other applications to automate the storage and management of data on optical devices. By aggregating optical media into a virtual storage pool, ArcX lets customers transparently write to and read data from CD, DVD, Magnetic Optical (MO), and now Ultra Density Optical (UDO) and Professional PDD drives.
ArcX lets users “drag and drop” infrequently accessed data into an optical storage pool. The result, LEGATO says, is a “simple Windows archiving solution helping to meet compliance requirements.”
Pricing for NetWorker PowerSnap Module for CLARiiON (2TB capacity) is $7,995, while the NetWorker PowerSnap Module for Symmetrix costs $17,495. The Centera Backup and Recovery Module for NetWorker (8 nodes or less) is priced at $11,495, and ArchiveXtender 5.1 costs $449 per optical device.
