Optical networking company Nortel Networks and storage giant EMC Corporation today announced an alliance to provide optically-networked storage solutions that are designed to extend the benefits of mission critical storage networking over campus, metro and wide area systems.
As part of the alliance, Nortel Networks and EMC are collaborating on development, testing, and marketing of open, standards-based solutions that will be focused on breaking through technological barriers associated with connectivity and extend the reach of storage networks. These solutions will be based on Nortel Networks leading OPTera Metro multiservice platform and EMC’s market-leading information storage systems and software.
“Our alliance with EMC is a key step for Nortel Networks to bring the value of storage to metropolitan areas and beyond,” said Brian McFadden, president, Metro Optical Networks, Nortel Networks. “These integrated solutions will be designed to enable the consolidation of storage facilities in the metro and wide area networks, providing greater efficiencies, lower costs, and improve users access to information. For service providers, these solutions will offer additional revenue opportunities and competitive differentiation through managed information storage solutions, hosted CRM (customer relationship management) and other managed services and applications.”
EMC and Nortel Networks have tested Nortel Networks CRM applications with an optically-networked storage infrastructure as an example of an application that, they say, can realize significant benefits from the combined technologies.
