SNIA Announces Work Group

The Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA) announced a collaborative effort to produce more comprehensive documentation of the network protocol used by existing CIFS (Common Internet File System) implementations.

The SNIA CIFS Documentation Work Group, acting as the focal point within the industry, will collect and document CIFS protocol information from SNIA members. In addition, the collaboration will be open to contributions and comments from the entire industry including non-SNIA organizations.

“The Common Information File System (CIFS) is one of the most commonly used protocols in Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices today,” said Larry Krantz, Chairman of the SNIA Board of Directors. “With the increased deployment of NAS devices over the last few years, interoperability has become an important issue within the IT community. The first step in assuring interoperability within the industry is to clearly define and document the protocol.”
