Legato Systems, Inc. this week announced that Sun Microsystems will sell and support the newly released version of Legato NetWorker(R) 6.1 for information protection under the brand name Solstice Backup(TM) 6.1, as part of the companies’ continuing OEM agreement.

With today’s announcement, Sun has again raised the bar on the level of service and quality technology our customers have come to expect from the Sun and Legato agreement.”
Through Solstice Backup 6.1, Sun says it will offer its customers new business critical features to improve the manageability, performance and availability of backup and restore operations in SAN (Storage Area Network) and NAS (Network-Attached Storage) environments. These enhancements are designed to reduce the overall cost of ownership of information protection solutions for storage networks.
Enhancements include a new Dynamic Drive Sharing (DDS) option that allows tape drives to be dynamically reconfigured and shared across multiple storage nodes in a SAN environment. DDS optimizes manageability and enables best possible utilization of high performance tape libraries in a SAN while significantly reducing the overall investment and administrative expense. The DDS option is the first to enable the sharing of tape drives between multiple NDMP-enabled NAS devices.
Solstice Backup 6.1 also expands Sun’s Linux support by adding NDMP (Network Data Management Protocol) for Red Hat, Caldera, and SuSE Linux, providing data centers and branch offices with the option of using low-cost Linux servers for protecting NDMP-based NAS file servers. To speed data recovery, Solstice Backup 6.1 implements NDMP’s Direct Access Restore (DAR) capabilities for the first time. Instead of scanning tapes to find needed files, DAR quickly positions tapes at the exact file location(s), delivering faster file level restores with less downtime.
