With the importance for data backup at a premium, Veritas Software
Wednesday introduced the first major refresh of its popular Veritas Backup
Exec for Windows servers in a few years.

Veritas Chief Marketing Officer Jeremy Burton said the flagship software
Backup Exec 9.0 for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) includes a
number of new features from the last version, including speedier install,
backup and restoration of Microsoft Exchange e-mail servers and the first
“Anywhere Internet” interface, which lets systems administrators monitor and
manage data from any Net-connected computer. Backup Exec 9.0 also boasts the
first integrated support of Microsoft Windows Server 2003 (née .NET).

Backup Exec 9.0 is the kind of product SMBs use in case of a major
catastrophe that causes the network to go down, Burton said. The smaller
enterprises are increasingly realizing the importance of this software
niche, and the segment is estimated to quadruple its spending on storage
over the next four years to $18.5 billion.

“Backup Exec 9.0 also allows companies to restore individual public folders
and attachments, providing an extra level of granularity to e-mail backup
operations,” Burton told internetnews.com. Burton also said the
product installs in 10 minutes.

Backup Exec 9.0, which has been tightly integrated with
Microsoft’s server environments for a decade, supports all Microsoft server
platforms, including the upcoming Windows Server 2003 and .NET suite of
products.

Microsoft, of course, was excited about the upgrade.

“We congratulate VERITAS on the launch of Backup Exec 9.0 and are especially delighted about its support of our key storage API’s including the new Volume ShadowCopy Service,” said Bob Ellsworth, Director, Windows Server Product Management Group. “Backup Exec 9.0 will provide compelling data protection options for our joint customers and is a vital contribution to the already growing momentum behind Windows Server 2003 from the ISV community.”

Veritas, a storage software leader, competes with the likes of EMC and
Computer Associates in the data backup and disaster recovery software
sector.

Veritas Backup Exec 9.0 for Windows servers is available now through a
network of distributors and resellers for a retail price of $795.
