Western Digital Corp. today announced the availability of what it says is the highest capacity high-performance desktop EIDE hard drive — a 7,200 RPM three-platter model offering 100 GB of digital storage.

According to Western Digital, the new 100 GB WD Caviar hard drives can store a combination of 1,800 digital photos, 4 hours of digital video, 40 hours of digital music downloads, 18 digital games, and 30 software programs.

“Western Digital continues to hold the leading market share of 7,200 RPM drives by delivering hard drives with the unique combination of exceptional performance and high capacity,” said Richard E. Rutledge, Western Digital vice president of marketing. The WD Caviar 7,200 RPM family now includes 30, 40, 60, 80 and 100 GB capacity models, expanding Western Digital’s overall product mix.

Shipments of the 100 GB hard drives are expected to begin this month.
