BellSouth said today that it will offer a free global e-mail service, Web Mail, created in conjunction with e-mail provider Bigfoot Partners, L.P.

BellSouth said Web Mail incorporates IMAP technology to provide e-mail to users without the need for a specific ISP. Customers will be able to access their mailboxes via the Web using a browser.

Once online, users can go through BellSouth’s gateway,
the BellSouth corporate site or BellSouth’s educational site.

The company said that Web Mail allows users to have multiple mailboxes
without any cost, along with access to other e-mail boxes. The mailboxes are portable so that an e-mail address does not have to be changed even if users change service providers.

“We want every BellSouth customer to establish an e-mail address and begin
benefiting from the convenience, flexibility and portability e-mail provides
even if they don’t have direct Internet access themselves,” said Donna
Lachance, vice president of marketing for BellSouth.net Services.
