Networking solutions provider Lucent Technologies today said it signed an agreement with Atlanta-based WorldPort Communications Inc. to supply optical networking transmission equipment for WorldPort’s network in the Netherlands.

In June, WorldPort acquired EnerTel N.V., an alternative public
telecommunications
operator (PTO) in the Netherlands. Under today’s agreement, Lucent said it
will supply its WaveStar OLS 80G Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing
(DWDM) system to upgrade EnerTel’s high-capacity,
18,000-kilometer fiber optic nationwide network.

DWDM is scheduled for deployment in Alkmaar, Amsterdam, Beverwijk, Eindhoven, The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Zwolle, with
interconnect points to Germany and Belgium.

According to Lucent, DWDM technology enables network operators to greatly increase the amount of voice and data traffic carried on a single optical transmission fiber while using their existing infrastructure. Since it uses existing fibers, DWDM is also seen as a speedy and cheaper means of increasing network capacity.

“Through our EnerTel network, we have broad coverage offering a foothold in the Netherlands and expanding our network reach into Continental Europe,” said Dan Wickersham, WorldPort’s president and COO. “With the overlay of Lucent’s SDH, DWDM and premier network management services, we’re able to greatly enhance our
capacity and network presence in these strategic markets.”

In June Lucent also signed an agreement with WorldPort to design, deploy and maintain a global Internet Protocol (IP)-based network that will use the EnerTel transport network in Europe. Trials are scheduled to begin in October.
