Infrastructure independent software vendor (ISV) The Progress Company (a business unit of Progress Software ) today announced that it is adding a suite of disaster recovery services to its ASPen managed services program.
According to the company, the Progress Disaster Recovery services are the first specifically tailored for over 40,000 companies that use Progress-based business applications worldwide.
The services are designed to integrate the capabilities of the ASPen data center hosting services with the business solutions that reside within a customer’s location. According to Progress, the services bridge the gap between outsourced-hosted and on-site customer environments without requiring companies to install any additional software on their primary business systems.
“Disaster recovery is on every IT manager’s mind these days,” said Lew Hollerbach, research director for IT services at Aberdeen Group. “In tune with its customers’ needs, Progress has created services, based on an innovative combination of local and remote application hosting environments, that will help businesses recover from any failure.”
According to Progress, its services allow companies to implement disaster recovery services that meet their specific needs and budget constraints. For example, customers can decide what the required system recovery time will be, what data or system elements need to be backed up, the data backup refresh rate and so on.
The disaster recovery system consists of three core services:
- Online Data Backup — Provides automated backup of operational data files and recovery journaling files for on-site restoration
- Online Environment Backup — Provides automated backup of data files and after-image files, as well as database, application and user-configurable environments for continuously available on-site restoration
- Online Hot Standby — Provides a fully replicated system ready to go live as the primary system in the event of an on-site system failure
The Progress Company’s ASPen Program is designed to provide the ingredients required by an ISV to extend existing applications to the ASP model. To help ISVs take advantage of the demand for ASP-based solutions, the ASPen program offers educational services, empowerment services, managed hosting services, professional services and marketing services.
“These new solutions leverage our expertise in running a non-stop data center environment, our advanced technologies that integrate on-site and off-site environments, and our deep knowledge of the Progress OpenEdge platform,” said Chris Clabaugh, vice president of ASPen Managed Services, the Progress Company.
The disaster recovery services will be available in North America in January and will be extended worldwide throughout 2002.
