Hughes Hits 8 Million Target

Hughes Network Systems (HNS) shipped two million DirecTV receivers in 2001, reaching a new milestone of eight million total systems shipped since it began production in 1996. The Germantown, Md.-based HNS is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hughes Electronics Corp., which provides broadband satellite network solutions for businesses and consumers, with more than 500,000 systems installed in 85 countries.

HNS pioneered the development of high-speed satellite Internet access services, which it markets globally under the DirecPC and DirecWAY brands, and is a major supplier of mobile satellite networks, including GSM-enabled portable handsets and Internet devices.

“We are very pleased to have achieved such strong sales numbers, particularly at the end of the year,” said Paul Gaske, executive vice president and general manager for HNS’ North America division. “We’ve achieved this milestone by continuing to focus on producing the highest-quality products with the best value and features.”

Added Peter Gulla, vice president of sales and marketing at HNS, “Our customers, dealers and retailers expect HNS to deliver the best DirecTV products on the market — products that combine ease of use and compelling features for consumers at every price point. The continued demand for our set-top receivers is a powerful reinforcement that we are delivering what customers want.”

Consumers can now get an integrated satellite TV and broadband Internet home system through DirecWay offered through DirecTV.
