Now that the Verizon iPhone is a reality, the Apple prognosticators are turning their attention to the iPhone 5.
There are some reports suggesting that the next-generation iPhone will have a 4-inch display, to more squarely compete with the likes of the Google Nexus S and Samsung Galaxy S, both Android smartphones with screens half an inch larger than the current iPhone 4’s 3.5-inch viewing area.
At issue, however, is the resolution: the iPhone 4’s “Retina Display” packs more pixels per inch with its 640×960 resolution, compared to the Nexus S, which has a Super AMOLED display with a 480×800 resolution. Still, size matters when it comes to mobile device screens, and it appears Apple is ready to ante up to put the resolution debate to rest.
The hints at potential iPhone 5 features come at a time when the Android mobile operating system is gaining in market share, and any move by Apple to match the flagship Nexus S is likely to be viewed within that competitive context, whereas a year ago it was framed as a BlackBerry-iPhone battle.
