To hear Apple tell it, the iPhone 4 is the best-designed smartphone the company has ever made. Still, Apple CEO Steve Jobs was compelled to answer charges that his company implemented a faulty antenna design that negatively affects reception. Before he announced a fix to the problem, Jobs showed off several competing smartphones he claimed had similar problems.
As Enterprise Mobile Today reports, several smartphone makers, including Research-in-Motion, strong disputed their devices suffer from the same reception issues as the iPhone.
Before announcing on Friday that Apple would address the antenna reception issue by offering iPhone 4 buyers a free bumper, a defiant Steve Jobs emphasized the problem was not unique to Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL).
He specifically mentioned the BlackBerry Bold 9700, HTC Droid Eris, and Samsung Omnia II, saying they all dropped signal somewhat when gripped a certain way. But those vendors were quick to distance themselves from Jobs’ claim.
