Motorola Tuesday forged an alliance with Borland under which the e-business implementation solutions provider will offer its JBuilder 4 Foundation development environment as part of the Motorola iDEN Subscriber Group’s developer’s toolkit.

The two companies established the relationship as a prelude to the launch of Motorola’s Java 2 Platform Micro Edition (J2ME) technology-enabled multiple communication handsets, known as iDEN. iDEN handsets, which Motorola said will be available in the first half of 2001, will combine the capabilities of an Internet-ready digital wireless phone, text pager and two-way radio with the goal of enabling users to communicate with one or hundreds of individuals at the push of a button.

Borland’s JBuilder 4 Foundation is a Pure Java development environment which supports the latest Java 2 platform standards and cross-platform development. It is designed to ease and speed the development process and allow developers to build, compile, debug and deploy Java technology-based applications.

“Using JBuilder, developers can rapidly deliver a full spectrum of platform independent solutions, including mission-critical Internet solutions or networked database and client/server connectivity,” said Tony de la Lama, vice president and general manager of Borland’s Java Business Unit. “JBuilder’s open, scalable and standards-based development environment shortens the time-to-market for Java technology-based applications.”

Developers can request a free toolkit on CD-ROM by registering with the Motorola iDEN Subscriber Group’s developer support program.
