Netscape Communications Corp this week added additional source code to the developer release of Communicator 5.0 which is now available on the mozilla.org Web site.
The new source code includes an advanced XML parser as well as a
technical preview of the next-generation layout engine.
The early developer release of the Communicator 5.0 source code, first made
available on the site two weeks ago, has already been downloaded more than
100,000 times from mozilla.org alone.
Additionally, an estimated 100,000
downloads have occurred from the more than 100 mirror sites located around the globe. The first “updated” source to be checked in by a developer occurred 24 hours after the source was released.
The recently included XML parser was developed by James Clark, the technical lead of the XML working group at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and one of the original creators of XML. “Expat,” as the parser is code-named, is regarded by some in the XML community as the most advanced parser available.
The newly released technical preview of the layout engine utilizes a next-generation architecture designed to achieve superior performance. Eventually the layout engine will include full support of HTML 4.0, the W3C DOM, Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), XML, and Resource Description Framework (RDF).
