Nielsen Takes Over at Borland

Borland’s board of directors has named a former Oracle executive to lead its operations, company officials announced Tuesday.

Tod Nielsen, former Oracle senior vice president of marketing and global sales support, takes over president and CEO duties from interim chief Scott Arnold. Arnold stepped in after Dale Fuller resigned as president and CEO in July after weak second-quarter sales.

Borland’s applications compete against Microsoft’s Visual Studio and IBM’s Rational product lines.

Nielsen has held a number of software industry posts. Before Oracle, he was chief marketing officer and executive vice president of engineering at BEA Systems . Prior to that, he had worked at Microsoft for 12 years, ultimately as vice president of Microsoft’s platform group.

“The board of directors was impressed with Mr. Nielsen’s deep experience in our target markets, his proven leadership in market leading software companies, and the passion he brings as an individual to the need for better software development,” William Hooper, Borland chairman of the board, said in a statement.

Borland is in the midst of a software reorganization. Long known for its popular JBuilder IDE , the company is transforming its standalone software application business into an application lifecycle management (ALM) suite.

The initiative, introduced by company officials in September 2004, is called Software Delivery Optimization (SDO).

While the company has been shedding its reliance on continued in-house development of core IDE functionality in favor of the Eclipse framework, it’s been developing and acquiring software companies that expand on its ALM aims.

Last month, Borland bought IT management and governance developer Legadero to fill out its management layer; in January the company purchased consulting firm TeraQuest.

Nielsen said he would continue the SDO push and looks forward to championing Borland’s software.

“As businesses become more dependent on their IT strategy to drive growth, the need for predictable, accountable, and repeatable software delivery is greater than ever before,” he said in a statement. “Software organizations are facing significant challenges in order to be more responsive to business needs, and I believe Borland is the right company to help address these challenges.”
