CA made a move into enterprise records management Tuesday with the acquisition of MDY Group International.

MDY’s software and services help organizations centrally manage physical and electronic records distributed across the enterprise, regardless of location or origin. CA plans to use the acquisition to help customers meet company-wide compliance, corporate governance and legal discovery requirements.

The acquisition “moves CA seriously into information management,” said Enterprise Management Associates senior analyst Mike Karp.

MDY boasts partnerships with EMC’s Documentum unit, Symantec/Veritas, HP, NetApp, Cisco and Microsoft, among others.

CA said MDY’s record management technology complements its own e-mail management, file management and discovery solutions, helping customers meet regulatory and legal demands without data migration costs or large-scale infrastructure changes.

“With this acquisition, CA is providing customers with an even more compelling and complete solution for mitigating risk and streamlining information assets,” Bob Davis, senior vice president and general manager of CA’s storage management business unit, said in a statement.

According to Forrester Research, the records management market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of 84% to $1.3 billion in 2008.

CA will market and support the full suite of MDY products and services and integrate MDY’s records management technology with CA Message Manager for managing e-mail and other business documents. CA last year acquired enterprise message management and archiving software firm iLumin.

MDY CEO and founder Galina Datskovsky will become CA’s senior vice president for BrightStor.

MDY’s flagship product, MDY FileSurf, automates record-keeping processes, and MDY’s Federated RM enforces records management strategies across multiple, disparate repositories through a centralized console and rules engine.

MDY was founded in 1988 and is headquartered in Fair Lawn, N.J.
