Sun Microsystems this week launched i-Planet, a new software product that is said to “extend the boundaries of the workplace.”
iPlanet enables users to access the whole enterprise, complete with applications, calendars, files and e-mail, from any Java-enabled browser, at any time. It will be sold non-exclusively through the Sun-Netscape Alliance.
Unlike most existing portal solutions, i-Planet provides more than HTML applications and e-mail, the group said. It offers a gateway to a comprehensive, heterogeneous communications space where the user can access any application running on a variety of operating systems. It enables connections to all enterprise resources, including those that are behind a firewall.
“i-Planet allows businesses for the first time to make valuable information, applications and resources in the corporate intranet available to remote employees, field offices, customers, partners, suppliers and consultants from anywhere, through any browser-enabled device, at any time and on-demand,” said Mark Tolliver, president and general manager of the Sun-Netscape Alliance.
Tested extensively within Sun Microsystems as Sun.Net, i-Planet is scheduled to be released as a product May 17. Pricing is on a per-user basis, from $10,000 for 100 users, $39,995 for 1000 users, and $16 per user in large quantities.
