VERITAS Nabs Storage Reporting Product

Looking to elevate its prowess in the storage resource management sector, VERITAS Software Thursday purchased NTP Software’s Storage Reporter, a product that gives IT managers a clear view of their storage usage.

Financial details were not made public, but Mountain View, Calif.’s VERITAS believes Storage Reporter will complement its own storage resource management (SRM) offering, VERITAS SANPoint Control to better enable IT managers to track and plan storage usage.

The reporting capabilities of Storage Reporter will be integrated with the management features of SANPoint Control, which enables companies to automate the management of disparate storage devices and platforms from an application.

VERITAS hopes CIOs will be attracted to the bolstered SANPoint Control to better predict future storage growth patterns, as well as allowing them to better manage storage costs.

Mark Bregman, executive vice president of product operations for VERITAS Software, said the play should make it easier for customers to “look to a single vendor to provide them with automated discovery and management of their storage infrastructure and the reporting tools.”

Storage management is a market with huge potential, with market leaders VERITAS — the clear leader — and EMC nipping at its heels.

Aberdeen Group estimated that storage spending will reach $21.2 billion by 2005. David Hill, Aberdeen Vice President of Storage Research, Storage & Storage Management, said reasons for this high total include the need for businesses to rein in the costs of managing storage and to fulfill fiduciary responsibility for protecting information assets, as well as eke out more productivity with a constrained budget.
