In an attempt to expand its technology, a2b music, AT&T’s online music delivery
system, Friday entered into an agreement with RealNetworks to incorporate RealSystem G2
streaming media technology into its services.
a2b, a music marketing and technology company, makes available many of
today’s most popular songs for download, as well as distributes songs
digitally to retail companies. Until today, it offered its own proprietary
software to play downloaded music, but had no streaming technology.
Under the agreement with RealNetworks, music lovers can sample streamed
songs prepared with a2b music’s compression technology, and a2b music
products using RealSystem G2 technology will be licensed to third parties
such as artists, labels and other copyright holders. Financial
terms were not disclosed.
“RealNetworks is the recognized market leader in streaming media
technology and streamed audio is the preferred way to
browse music samples on the Internet,” said Howie Singer, a2b music chief
technical officer.
“By integrating RealNetworks’ technology into the a2b music player, we’re
giving music fans access to both superior digital downloads and streamed
music through the a2b music player.”
