Britain’s QVC Channel Expands to the Web

QVC, Britain’s first and only TV shopping channel,
will launch an e-commerce
site on the Web on Oct. 1, its fifth anniversary.

The site, to be called QVCUK.com, will bring in a potential new
audience for QVC of 5.9 million British Internet users, to add to the existing
6.8 million cable and satellite viewers in the UK who can already access QVC
on television, the company said.

“For QVC to join the Internet was a natural progression and means we can
now offer people yet another
shopping alternative with the same quality, value and convenience that our
customers have learned to expect from our television-based service,” said
Tim Megaw, director of production at QVC.

QVC’s new Web site, which is based on the successful iQVC Internet site in the
United States, will offer more than 12,000 products online. Photographs of
every available item are being produced in-house at QVC’s London studios,
while a team of copywriters will work full time to prepare accompanying
descriptions. The company said it plans to add over 200 new products each week
to the site.

QVCUK online will also cover news, features and information about the channel,
as well as articles about the company and its guest celebrities and TV show
presenters.
