Chinese and foreign institutions are jointly
working on an effort to exploit the Internet’s potential for long distance
education in China, according to China’s official news agency Xinhua.

An official of the State Educational Development Research Center recently
said that there was an effort to develop Internet education in China and
that the objective of the plan was to provide education to anyone who had
access to the Internet anywhere in China.

Hunan University and Zhejiang University are already operating online
education programs, the official said.

In 1995, China launched an education and research network called CERnet
linking all major cities with the capital city of Beijing, said a Ministry
of Education official.

The official indicated that over a half million users visited CERnet but
that it lacked the speed and resources needed to meet the requirements of
the growing level of users.
