[March 20, 2001 Mumbai] CNet India, a part of the US-based C-Net Networks Inc, has shut down its Indian operations.

A message posted at india.cnet.com says: “You can continue to find the best technology news, reviews, games and more by visiting ZDNet India (http://www.zdnetindia.com).”

While internationally cnet.com took over the content of zdnet.com, in India zdnetindia.com proved a much stronger brand with 250,000-300,000 users, the company sources claimed.

According to sources close to the company, 11 employees of CNet India were asked to quit on Monday. The 11 employees are being given a severance package of two months.

It is understood that ZDNet’s (a wholly-owned subsidiary of CNet Networks Inc) Executive VP International Jonathan Epstein, was here to close CNet’s Indian operations.

CNet is a direct competitor of Internet.com, parent company of this Web site.
