After two consecutive weeks in which most of our 13 Internet sectors gained, upward movement has stalled amid confusion and uncertainty surrounding this week’s presidential election, with the Nasdaq falling 5.4% on Wednesday alone.
The real question is whether ‘Net stocks will resume their comeback or begin looking for yet another bottom. Trouble is, we may not know that answer for some time, since legal challenges to Tuesday’s vote loom in Florida and elsewhere.
Until we know who the next president will be, expect Internet stocks to be trapped in a lockbox of investor anxiety and doubt.

driven to new lows in September and October, though shares did
slump. AETH is up 43% so far this month, thanks in large part to
a Q3 report showing strong revenue growth but widening losses.
OmniSky dips below $10 for the first time since going public in
late September. Handspring boasts the best numbers for the month,
with a 69% gain.

This sector tops all others for the second straight week, and posts
its third big gain in a row. And yet there isn't one stock here that
is up over the past month. The best monthly performer, America Online,
is down 22% as shares continue to hover in limbo pending the FTC
ruling on its merger with Time Warner. For the year, AOL is the only
ticker here that hasn't totally melted down, with a YTD loss of 37%.
Runner-up is Walt Disney Internet Group, which has lost two-thirds
of its value. And it just gets uglier after that. Latin portal
StarMedia Network reports wider Q3 losses, but beats street estimates.

two companies sinking further. Group leader LendingTree has gained
87% since hitting a new all-time low close of $2.78 on Oct. 13. Key
catalyst: A Q3 report issued Oct. 18 that showed losses being reduced
to 81 cents per share from $1.04 per share in the second quar
ter.
Top YTD sector performer is Ameritrade, down 35%, but up a sliver
(0.5%) over the past three months, making it the only gainer for
any measured time period beyond a week.

Sagent Technology grabs the No. 1 slot among all 'Net tickers this
week, thanks to a deal with Siemens in which the German technology
giant will use SGNT's customer data analysis software. Shares zoomed
up 47% on Monday alone, but are still down 91% for the year to date.
Web-based service and support software provider ServiceWare continues
to fall since going public in late August. Shares are down 51% from
Aug. 25 first-day close of $8.75.

37 cents per share in the year-ago quarter. Investors must have been
impressed by the near-quadrupling of revenue to $44.3 million.
Growing losses, shrinking revenue explain US SEARCH.com's residency
in the sector's basement. SRCH, truth be told, is close to flatlining.
Messaging services provider Mail.com tries throwing things overboard
to generate investor support, announcing it would sell "non-core"
a
ssets such as Asia.com and India.com. Instead, shares continue
to fall.

of $2.43 (set two weeks ago) than the $24.13 high from early January.
Two earnings report disasters crowd the cellar. CMGI-owned Engage
Technologies blows its Q1 sales forecast, triggering the resignation
of CEO Paul Schaut. Meanwhile, 24/7 Media gets clobbered after missing
Q3 estimates, announcing layoffs and forecasting slower growth.
It's shakeout time in this sector.

Last year Ramp Networks delivered a Q3 earnings warning to disastrous
effect. This year RAMP delivered a Q3 earnings warning to disastrous
effect. That was a month ago, but it explains RAMP's sector-leading
turn this week. It's called bouncing off a new bottom. Since
announcing its first quarterly profit on Oct. 19, Packeteer has soared
78%. I'd say Juniper Networks is due for a big fall, but it had one
recently, when shares nosedived 32% from Oct. 16 to Oct. 30. But
they regained much of those losses, and JNPR remains the No. 1 Internet
stock this year with a 340% advance.

Earthlink reports wider Q3 losses, but manages to beat estimates,
thus getting a boost from investors. However, ELNK warned that
revenue growth from its dial-up business will slow. This week's
biggest loser is PSINet, which posted mediocre quarterly results
and may have to sell assets to raise much-needed cash and attempt
to pay debt. The shareholder lawsuits have begun. Ziplink can't pay
its debt to WorldCom and is looking or a buyer.
