Hongkong Telecom Signs CA Deal With Hongkong Post

Hongkong Telecom (HKT) and Hongkong Post signed
a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to provide the government agency with
electronic verification support.

On behalf of Hongkong Post, HKT will become one of the first Hong Kong
registration authorities to receive and verify applicants’ information and
details.

The telecom will ensure that the e-commerce applications of businesses
comply with the requirements of Hongkong Post.

“We are delighted to participate with Hongkong Post in promoting secure
electronic communications in Hong Kong,” said Linus WL Cheung, chief
executive of Hongkong Telecom. “The co-operation not only marks Hong Kong’s
first step in its e-commerce development, but also implements Hongkong
Telecom’s eVISION pledges.”

“We are the largest local Internet service provider, and can also call upon
Cable & Wireless Group’s international communications capability,” added
Cheung.”Providing the e-Cert for Hongkong Post takes us one step further in
implementing Cable & Wireless Group’s global strategy of Internet service
development.”

P C Luk, acting postmaster general, said, “The MOU that we are going to
sign today represents a business decision of our two organizations to
co-operate in promoting various areas of e-commerce; particularly the
Certification Authority (CA) services that will become public by the end of
1999.”

“It signifies our two organizations’ recognition of the changes in the
marketplace and their active response to these changes through meeting the
challenges of e-commerce,” continued Luk. “We hope that as a result, the
community at large will benefit from our efforts.”

According to HKT representatives, the telecom is also investing HK$500
million (US$64 million) in 1999 to bring the benefits of broadband Internet
access to around 80 percent of local households by 2000.
