America Online subsidiary ICQ said Friday it will use Inktomi search
technology on its portal, ICQ 99.

Scheduled to be released in a test version in the coming weeks, Inktomi’s
search technology will be integrated into ICQ’s main client menu,
supporting customized Internet searches with just one click from the ICQ
desktop icon. Called Most Visited, the search engine is made to return
results based on how many times other users accessed the site

The two firms are also working to develop dedicated searches within
ICQ-related registrant-created sites, message boards and chat rooms.

“Adding search to ICQ will enhance its position as a next-generation portal
by allowing users to search right from the desktop,” said David
Peterschmidt, president and chief executive officer of Inktomi.
