Moves and news:
E*TRADE (NASDAQ:EGRP) reports fiscal fourth-quarter revenue of $68.7 million, up 32% vs. 4q97. Net loss is $15.7 million due to heavy marketing costs, acquisitions and ramp up of its services. Fiscal year 1998 revenues rise 57% to $245.3 million. We believe E*TRADE has the opportunity to be one of the few financial brands borne of the Web to reach out and re-intermediate traditional banking and financial services, simply for the focus E*TRADE has. Although Datek gets good reviews from our reader/user base.
USWeb (NASDAQ:USWB) signs 20th Century Fox, Jenny Craig, Motion Picture Association, Ocean Spray and Remerica Real Estate Corp. as clients. You may recall it’s in a deal to acquire CKS Group (NASDAQ:CKSG). The market has said “no” but we think if it can make the integration work that the combined company, Reinvent Communications (or whatever they settle on) could be a powerful integrated marketing/ad/consulting player.
Netscape (NASDAQ:NSCP) fires its own salvo at the international portal space on the heels of Microsoft’s (NASDAQ:MSFT) MSN renewed effort. Netscape partners with local search, content providers. The stats according to Netscape: Netcenter counts eight million registered members since its launch in September 1997 with 30 percent of that membership coming from 217 countries outside the U.S.
